Once upon a time on a subcontient far far away, Brahmins controlled information by restricting (a) free association within society (b) travel and (b) the teaching of their (stilted) language and (laughably parochial) knowledge. The punishment for an "unclean" person overhearing the recital of scripture was death by the pouring of molten metal into his ear. The situation was about the same in the hidden history of another "enlightened" continent.
In more recent times, Mr. Asian Values wanted his people to be trapped in Mandarin, before he got wind of the fact that Big Brother himself was changing course towards English.
